Pharmacy (from the Greek φάρμακον 'pharmakon' = drug) is the health profession that links the health sciences with the chemical sciences, and it is charged with ensuring the safe and effective use of pharmaceutical drugs.

The scope of pharmacy practice includes more traditional roles such as compounding and dispensing medications, and it also includes more modern services related to health care, including clinical services, reviewing medications for safety and efficacy, and providing drug information. Pharmacists, therefore, are the experts on drug therapy and are the primary health professionals who optimize medication use to provide patients with positive health outcomes. Pharmacy is also the term for an establishment where pharmacy (in the first sense) is practised (synonym: drugstore).

The word pharmacy is derived from its root word pharma which was a term used since the 1400–1600s. In addition to pharma responsibilities, the pharma offered general medical advice and a range of services that are now performed solely by other specialist practitioners, such as surgery and midwifery. The pharma (as it was referred to) often operated through a retail shop which, in addition to ingredients for medicines, sold tobacco and patent medicines. The pharmas also used many other herbs not listed.

In its investigation of herbal and chemical ingredients, the work of the pharma may be regarded as a precursor of the modern sciences of chemistry and pharmacology, prior to the formulation of the scientific method.

How do you gain an approval of college of pharmacy admissions Committee?
Q. I am in a community college that does not have a pre-pharmacy major, but I am trying to complete my pre-pharmacy requirements before I transfer to an accredited pharmacy college. Unfortunately, the college I want to go to wants an approval of college of pharmacy admissions Committee. I don't know anything about this or how to get it.

A. First of all Pre-Pharmacy isn't a major, its just a series of classes you take to get in to pharmacy school. If yours school offeres those classes to get in, it doens't matter if "pre-pharmacy" isn't listed in the catalog. Second most schools have an admissions committee (already made up of members of the pharmacy school) to help determine who to let in and who not to let in... just read the schools admissions procedures to determine what you need to apply. Usually they will list all the classes you need to have completed and the minimum GPA they expect. You fill out the admission paperwork and submit all your transcripts and anything else they ask for (sometimes you have to do an interview) and it goes before the admission committee.. [cont.]

A. Pharmacies have a network that they can use to check with other pharmacies. Especially if narcotics are involved. Unfortunately, too many people these days "doctor shop" and get pain med prescriptions from different doctors and fill them at different pharmacies, then try to sell them on the street. I work in a doctor's office and see it all the time. Recently we were called from a Walgreens pharmacist who informed us that one of our surgeons had written a prescription for pain med for a patient who had filled 5 different prescriptions for pain med from 3 different doctors in the last week. They alerted all the doctors and pharmacies involved and of course cut off the patient supply. As a nurse I also have called pharmacies to get the… [cont.]
