A. Well, first you need to genuinely enjoy chemistry. Try a few simple experiments, learn why they work, and if you get bored, forget about it. If not, maybe there's a major in organic chemistry in your future. P.S. If you're interested in chemistry because of molecules like LSD, here's a great experiment for a beginner to toy with:

What is the difference between a Chemist and a Chemical Engineer?
Q. Also what does a chemist do?
Asked by Peanuts Suck - Wed Aug 9 20:49:54 2006 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. A chemist works in a laboratory. Various jobs that a chemist can have include quantitative analysis (running high pressure liquid chromatography tests, gas or mass spectrometer tests) organic (usually working with water, like at an electric company and they do tests for water quality), or trying out new formulations for plastics, pharmaceuticals, or chemicals, including oil. A chemist works on a bench or pilot plant (very small scale). A chemical engineer works at a manufacturing plant. The new formulations that the chemist creates will need an engineer's knowledge to manufacture them on a large scale. For instance, a distillation column in a lab will be 6 inches, but a distillation column at a refinery is over 100 feet long.

An atmospheric chemist studying the reactions of the pollutant SO2 places a mixture of SO2 and O2 in a 3.52 L ?
Q. An atmospheric chemist studying the reactions of the pollutant SO2 places a mixture of SO2 and O2 in a 3.52 L container at 895 K and an initial pressure of 1.95 atm. When the reaction occurs, gaseous SO3 forms, and the pressure eventually falls to 1.65 atm. How many moles of SO3 form?
Asked by f_350crewcab - Mon Oct 13 17:59:21 2008 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Use PV = nRT to get the change in the number of moles. Use the balanced equation to see how this relates to the number of moles SO3 formed. That's all there is to it. Over to you.

If I have an invention that needs a chemist of a specific type, where can I go to get help?
Q. I dont want to patent it until I know that it works. I heard provisional patents are pretty much useless. Do I hire a chemist? Do I go to my local university and talk to a professor? And am I safe if I just have them sign a disclosure document?

A. I should think that you are better advised to discuss the matter with a university professor than a commercial chemist. The prof has a reputation to uphold, and guards it zealously...the chem is more a hit-or-miss situation, so you would have to investigate his credentials. A simple oral agreement with a prof could be sufficient, at least initially. (But he is not likely to make a blanket agreement w/o knowing something about your problem...after all, he or his group might be working on a similar project.) Moreover, the prof has immediate access to imput from a variety of chemists...even though you seem to think you know the 'specific type' needed, there are inter-relationships and synergisms involved in group advisories. Many profs act… [cont.]

How Long Do You Have To Go To College To Become a Chemist?
Q. I am Looking for College Careers That I am Interested in and Wouldn't Be That Hard. All You Have to Do it Mix Things Together and Try Not To Catch The Whole Lab on Fire... I am Thinking about a Chemist. It Seems Kind of Fun, But I Have Been Wondering. How Long Does it Take You Graduate From College to Become a Chemist?

A. Chemistry is more complex than you're giving it credit to be... Take another look to see how difficult it actually is. Regardless, to have a B.S. or a B. A. in chemistry, you will need four years. An M. S. in chemistry will take another two to three years. Doctoral degrees vary in the amount of time they take.

What a professional chemist in academia, industry, or a government lab might read and write?
Q. Like professional chemist do different things than the chemistry major students? Students read lab manual, write reports or graph on excel. What do the chemist have to do in their daily work period?
Asked by passive84 - Sat Jan 27 22:34:15 2007 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Professional chemists read journals on their specific area of expertise...ie. protein chemistry, carbohydrate chemistry (see for a long list). They read these to learn the latest techniques in their field, and to design experiments to, for example, increase yield, create new product with unique properties (Teflon, etc), and to get ideas for their own work. They do maintain a lab notebook, write reports, make graphs, give presentations to their lab colleagues, etc., as well as attend professional conferences. I encourage you to explore the American Chemical Society (ACS) website to learn lots more about the field.

A. I don't know the answer to this, but I do know, after being prescribed these, that they will become highly addictive if you carry on taking them for longer than is recommended, and will become less effective as well. Meaning that the more you take, the more you will need in the future to get the same effects from the original dose. That is why you are usually only prescribed a short course of these tablets. A word of warning if you are considering buying these over the internet, or any other source which isn't covered by a legal prescription --- you may think you are getting the correct medication, but there are unscrupulous people out there who are only in it to make money. Be very careful as you can't be 100% certain you are taking… [cont.]

A. First of all...letting a chemist or a student in chemistry mix up something from scratch that you then put on your face is dangerous and that is just asking for trouble. Second, companies making these gels professionally go through a series of formulation development and manufacturing process development to the get the product right. Then they go through a series of tests to make sure their production line is operating correctly. Then they go through a series of tests during production to make the sure the product is on quality. Third, a company developing a formula will spend millions of dollars on research and development and process construction before any product is ever released to the public. Private individuals do not have… [cont.]

Making the best high school plan to become a Chemist?

A. I'm not sure high school classes make that big of a difference. Take chemistry, physics, algebra, trig, pre-calculus or even calculus. College you will take gen chem I,II, organic chem I,II, physical chemistry I,II (thermo and quantum mechanics), analytical chem I,II (quant and instrumental analysis), inorganic chem, electives, physics I,II, physics elective, calculus I,II, III, diff equations, etc Grad school is the most important in my opinion. -Signed a PhD Chemist

How many years of School to be a Organic Chemist?
Q. How many years of School do you need to be a Organic Chemist?
Asked by TJ - Sat Jun 16 23:41:26 2007 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments

A. It all depends on how far you want to take your education. If, for instance, you got a job as a BS chemist in a pharmaceutical company doing organic synthesis then you are technically an organic chemist. If you want an advanced degree then there are two to choose from. The first is a masters degree. This usually takes 2 to 3 years. Most professors in PhD granting universities do not like to have masters students. They rather have PhD students. Sometimes the masters degree is kind of looked upon as a consolation prize for those who could not complete the PhD. I personally do not agree with this philosophy but nevertheless it exists. The second degree is the PhD. This can take anywhere from 4-8 years depending on the professor. … [cont.]

How much does a forensic chemist make a year?
Q. I was wondering how much a forensic chemist makes nowadays. What is their average starting salary and what is the most that some of them make? Asked by Sean - Sat Aug 16 03:09:16 2008 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Forensic chemist is a broad term. Different places classify differently. In general a forensic chemist can be someone who works in a forensic lab as a qualified examiner/ analyst. These jobs can be for the FBI, ATF, local agencies, state agencies, and private industry. Each position has different pay ranges. It matters greatly on the location. Most agencies try to stay competitive taking into account cost of living. For example a forensic chemist in Hawaii may start at 70k and one in New Hampshire may start at 30k. The huge difference is in the cost of living... they may actually be very comparable. For the most part the range could be about 35k to 90k. It all depends on the position and the level of experience. Don't expect to… [cont.]

A. I'm a Ph.D. Chemist and I was always good at math - though I never considered myself an "expert" at it. I've worked several jobs in industry, and none have required a lot of math. Certainly no calculus, differential equations or anything like that...that's the realm of engineering, not chemistry. Good Luck with your career :-)
