Biochemistry is the study of the chemical processes in living organisms. It deals with the structure and function of cellular components such as proteins, carbohydrates, lipids, nucleic acids and other biomolecules.

Among the vast number of different biomolecules, many are complex and large molecules (called polymers), which are composed of similar repeating subunits (called monomers). Each class of polymeric biomolecule has a different set of subunit types. For example, a protein is a polymer whose subunits are selected from a set of 20 or more amino acids. Biochemistry studies the chemical properties of important biological molecules, like proteins, and in particular the chemistry of enzyme-catalyzed reactions.

The biochemistry of cell metabolism and the endocrine system has been extensively described. Other areas of biochemistry include the genetic code (DNA, RNA), protein synthesis, cell membrane transport, and signal transduction.

Since all known life forms that are still alive today are descended from one of two common ancestors, they have generally similar biochemistries.

It remains unknown whether alternative types of biochemistries are possible, or practical, given the chemical elements composing the matter of the Universe. An emerging thesis, called "carbon chauvinism," holds that only carbon-based compounds are available to be part of a real biochemistry.

What are the options for one with a Biochemistry bachelors degree?
Q. I am going to do B.Sc (Hon.) in Biochemistry. It's gonna be equivalent to the undergraduate course and will be for 4 years. So what are the most successful career or study options after that?
Asked by Aam - Tue Nov 27 19:17:02 2007 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. I did my undergraduate degree in Biochem, and most of my friends in the program went onto graduate school to either do a Master's degree or PhD. The only job opportunities in Biochem is research and development, such as working for a pharmaceutical company or at a university as a tech or professor. With just a Bachelor's you may find a position as a lab technician but higher education like graduate school is needed to get a better position if you are interested in research and development. With a bachelors you may also find a job as a sales representative for a company (equipment supplies for labs etc.), but it may require extra training or schooling. Bear in mind, if you do wish to go to graduate school, then it will take 2 years… [cont.]

Can a biochemistry undergrad go to pharmacy school?
Q. Hi, I am an undergrad student and majoring in Biochemistry. I was wondering after i get my degree can I somehow go into pharmacy? I know schools have programs (like Rutgers which 6 years) but you have to start your undergrad there.

A. Yes you can. I would get a hold of someone from the school you are interested in and talk to them about it. Probably admissions or an advisor from pharmacy department.
