A chemist is a scientist trained in the science of chemistry. Chemists study the composition of matter and its properties such as density, acidity, size and shape. Chemists carefully describe the properties they study in terms of quantities, with detail on the level of molecules and their component atoms. Chemists carefully measure substance proportions, reaction rates, and other chemical properties.

Chemists use this knowledge to learn the composition, and properties of unfamiliar substances, as well as to reproduce and synthesize large quantities of useful naturally occurring substances and create new artificial substances and useful processes. Chemists may specialize in any number of subdisciplines of chemistry. Materials scientists and metallurgists share much of the same education and skills with chemists. Chemical engineers are concerned with the physical processes necessary to carry out industrial reactions (heating, cooling, mixing, diffusion etc) and to separate and purify the products, and work with industrial chemists on the development of new processes.

where can i find a chemist to make me a face gel?

A. First of all...letting a chemist or a student in chemistry mix up something from scratch that you then put on your face is dangerous and that is just asking for trouble. Second, companies making these gels professionally go through a series of formulation development and manufacturing process development to the get the product right. Then they go through a series of tests to make sure their production line is operating correctly. Then they go through a series of tests during production to make the sure the product is on quality. Third, a company developing a formula will spend millions of dollars on research and development and process construction before any product is ever released to the public. Private individuals do not have… [cont.]

Is there anything that I can do now if I'm interested in becoming an environmental chemist?
Q. Like interest courses, volunteer work, etc? Those who are interested in becoming doctors or nurses volunteer at hospitals, senior homes, or with paramedics. How about someone who wants to become an environmental chemist?

A. I am not a chemist, but I think that you could volunteer at a local park or conservationist area. In New York State, I have also seen jobs and internships that involve testing water in various areas, so you could perhaps call your state parks and recreation department, and ask if they have any similar opportunities. If you still can't find anything from these directions, contact the closest university, and make ask a professor who teaches or specializes in that field what you could do to become involved in the environmental chemist area right now. I'm sure that person would know!
